However, pectoral augmentation is possible via implants, it is a simple cosmetic surgical procedure that enhances the chest to suit the patient’s body proportions – resulting in symmetrical, aesthetic and improved chest contours. Chest implants can also be used for reconstructive surgery of patients who suffer from muscle atrophy and muscle injury due to trauma or other reasons. Procedure : Pectoral augmentation via chest implants is performed under local intravenous anaesthesia or general anaesthesia. The procedure begins with the surgeon making an incision along the hairline in the axilla or armpit. The surgeon then uses a few tools to create a pocket to slide the implant in. The surgeon then proceeds to size and fit the implant into place. Once desired results are achieved, the surgeon wraps up the procedure by closing the incision using sutures. The entire duration of the surgery is 1 to 3 hr. Risks & recovery Downtime – the patient can resume normal activities in 10 to 14 days. Activities – there should be minimal shoulder movement for the first few days into recovery. The patient is advised to refrain from using their upper body as much as possible Exercise – Swimming, gymming or any strenuous exercise should be avoided until prompted by the surgeon. Garments – the patient will be required to wear compression bandages until healing has commenced. Scarring – this procedure may cause visible scarring on the axilla. It is typically hidden under body hair, nevertheless, it can be reduced using laser resurfacing. Bruising – in case of chest augmentation, the patient’s skin will stretch rapidly and lead to severe bruising due to volume increase. Sensation – there may be partial loss of sensation after complete healing. This can cause temporary or permanent numbness around the treated area. Disruption – there is a possibility that the implant ruptures or moves away from its original placement. In this case, the patient may require another surgery. General risks – surgical procedures may cause redness, bruising, bleeding, hematoma, scarring, loss of sensation and infection. Rest – the patient is advised to take complete rest to promote fast healing. Ice & compression – the sutures should be compressed with an ice pack to reduce swelling. Elevation – the patient is advised to sleep in an upright and elevated position. This reduces swelling and avoids any tugging and pressure on the implant. Smoking – the patient is strictly advised to avoid smoking for up to two weeks post-treatment. Smoking can interfere with blood flow and can cause problems with healing. Alcohol – the patient is advised to avoid alcohol consumption for a few weeks as it can counteract with medications prescribed for aftercare. Medicines – the surgeon may prescribe painkillers, immunosuppressants and antibiotics. They can be a combination of tablets as well as topical treatments.
