China’s Tu Youyou Receives Nobel Prize in Medicine

Chinese scientist Tu Youyou accepted the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on Thursday in the Swedish capital of Stockholm. The 85-year-old researcher accepted the award along with Irish-born William Campbell and Japan's Satoshi Omura at the Nobel Prize award ceremony attended by more than 1,500 guests, including the Swedish royal family and previous Nobel laureates. Tu, China's first medicine Nobel laureate, won half of the prize "for her discoveries concerning a novel therapy against malaria," while Campbell and Omura were jointly awarded the other half of the prize "for their discoveries concerning a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites," according to the Nobel Assembly at Sweden's Karolinska Institute. "Your discoveries represent a paradigm shift in medicine, which has not only provided revolutionary therapies for patients suffering from devastating parasitic diseases, but also promoted well-being and prosperity for individuals and society. The global impact of your discoveries and the resulting benefit to mankind are immeasurable," said Hans Forssberg, a member of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute and chairman of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine. Tu, a Chinese trained pharmacologist and researcher at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing, was awarded for her contribution in the discovery of artemisinin, a drug that has significantly reduced the mortality rates of malaria patients.
