There has been long undercuts and different version of how at least 600 civilians were murdered in cold blood at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 14street in the suburb of Sinkor, on Sunday, July 29 at about 11:00 mid-night. IPNEWS has obtained a declassified documentary detailing how 40 members of slained former Liberian President Samuel K. Doe, surrounded the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church after a tip-off that the father of former NPFL rebel leader, Charles Taylor, (Nelson Taylor) had sought refuge there late afternoon, Sunday, July 29, from a protracted liness initally at the JFK in Monrovia. Sources tells IPNEWS that a senior commando, one of the NPFL best, trained in Burkinafaso (former Nimba Senator), through an undercover with some AFL soliders assigned at the Spriggs-Payne airfield alerted rebel fighters who had fearlessly fought to capture Old Road and the Sinkor. According to the transcript, Nelson Taylor was secretly taken off the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church hours after his arrival dressed as a woman with the aid of some Gio and Mano persons seeking refuge at the church. The transcript by UPI correspondent in Monrovia up to October 1990, revealed how Lt. Col. Michael Tilly, led at least 40 members of the deaths square onto the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, in a bid to captured and murdered Mr. Charles Taylor Father Nelson Taylor, gruesomely murdered at least 600 unarmed civilians mainly Gio and Mano from Buzzie Quarters, 1st Street community, and the 13 street enclave. UPI correspondent Mark Huband, narrates how , Lt. Colonel Tailey, loyal to former President Doe, was a notorious death squad commander who led government troops to the Lutheran Church compound in the suburb of Sinkor where hundreds of defenseless civilians from the Gio, Mano and other ethnic groups, fleeing targeted violence were taking refuge. Witnesses and survivors said over 600 men, women and children were killed in that massacre although the government at the time denied any involvement and blamed advancing rebels for the attack on the church compound. According to survivors, forces who carried out the Lutheran Church massacre were from the same Krahn ethnic group as then President Doe. UPI Huband, in an article written on October 10, 1990, narrates how mangrove swamps at the end of the runway of Monrovia’s Spriggs-Payne airfield lies the bloody legacy of Samuel Doe’s 10-year rule. Hundreds of skulls peered out from the long grass and bleached, clean bones lay on the dark, wet mud of the killing fields discovered Wednesday by advancing troops of the West African Peacekeeping Force. Picked clean by insects, perfectly perserved skeletons of slaughtered victims were wrapped in their rotting shorts, T-shirts and skirts. Others, with smashed skulls, lay naked, the dissolving flesh falling from their bones into the mud. ‘They used to come at night,’ said one man who lost five members of his family to Doe’s death squads. ‘They knocked at the door and said, ‘the chief wants to see you.’ Then they would take you either to the beach or, more often, to the airfield.’ A UPI correspondent counted more than 100 skulls scattered around the end of the runway, but could see more bones littered throughout the dense undergrowth into inaccessible swampland which stretches for miles beyond the airfield. UPI reports that at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, thousands filed past mutilated body when it was exhibited with ears, fingers and toes missing at a Monrovia hospital. Atrocities and indiscriminate killings have been committed by all sides in Liberia’s 10-month civil war. The peacekeeping force’s offensive against rebels in the east of Monrovia also gave access to the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where Doe’s soldiers butchered 600 refugees from rival tribes on July 29. #trc #africa #liberia
