Today we will look at the difference between “a” and “the.” “A” is an indefinite word – it doesn’t refer to a specific object. “The” is definite – it refers to a specific object. For example, you are talking with a friend, and you see a car drive by. You might say: I would like to own “a car.” You are referring to just the idea of a car, not the car which drove by. If you say: I like the color of “the car” which just drove by. You now refer to the specific car which you just saw. If you speak about “a car,” it is a general statement. If you speak about “the car,” you speak about a certain car. Here are the two words together: I would like to own “a cat” some day, in addition to “the dog” I now own. Thanks for watching.
