A snare that I rescued from a cupboard for £20. With help from Ian Croft of the Cambridge Drum Company (UK), who did his best to get the horrid warp out of the hoops and shell. The original varnish was in poor condition, so I've taken it off, and waxed the wood. A lovely grain comes through. The shell is a single piece, about 6mm thick. I'm not certain what wood it is yet. There was no viable snare or throw so I replaced the snare with a set of Bibin wires, and attached a Gibraltar Dennett "Beer Tap" throw. With the help of the amazing members of the Snares Facebook community, especially Kent Tisdel, TX (USA) I believe the drum to have been made by Dyer & Bro., St. Paul's, MN (USA) c.1890. I am open to more information to either confirm, or update that information. I like the sound of this little drum (12" x 4") and I shall take it into the studio and see how it fares with some good mic. I'll not use it much out of fear for its structural integrity, and I don't want to damage the top hoop. It is, however, a very welcome addition to my percussive arsenal, and I hope it survives another 130 years, and gets used and appreciated long after I've gone.
