Check out www.nzchilliforums.co.nz to see more of this soil vs hydro experiment. Okay, so the experiment plants CCP Naga and Yellow Moruga were getting a bit big for the seedling hydro bubbler and falling over. And I built that light box for the experiment so it was time to get serious and kick out all the other plants also. Now common belief with hydroponics is that you cannot control the fruits "Brix" or in the case of chillies the heat level. Not true. As with soil you can reduce the feeding to stress the plant. There is a many ways I am now aware of stressing a plant in hydroponics and controlling its "Brix", oil and sugar levels and its feeding. And the idea I had for this hydroponic system is just 1 of the tricks I have up my sleeve. Essentially the aim is to control when the plants get fed and watered. To do this there is one reservoir that the water and nutrients is pumped from into the top of the plants buckets filled with clay balls. The water then drains out the bottom and back to the reservoir. The pump can operate on a timer so there are set intervals when the water flow will stop and the clay balls will dry out. I will need to monitor the feeding to ensure the pump starts again just as the plant starts to wilt. But for now I am just running the pump 15 mins on every hour for the growth cycle. www.hotttasschillies.co.nz
