Wycoller, in the shadow of Pendle Hill, is a small hamlet of houses that appeared around the 10th Century. By 1550 the houses were joined by the construction of Wycoller Hall. As the 19th Century drew to a close, the hamlet became abandoned due to there being no work in the area. Mills and factories were in the larger towns, and the locals moved away. It became a ghost town. This coincided with the last owner of the Hall, Squire Cunliffe, having to sell off the stone from the hall to pay for his debts. However, a number of restless spirits remained in the hamlet taking the term 'ghost tiwn' quite literally. The hamlet is reportedly haunted by a number of phantoms. These include Guytrash the deathly hound, a Blue Lady who floats between walls, a poltergeist, two murdered wives from the Cunliffe family tree, and the Squire himself rides through Wycoller on his horse into the hall to re-enact a foul murder before riding away from the Hall. The clattering of hooves, the crack of a whip and blood curdling screams becoming an oft heard noise that echoes round the Trawden Forest Valley Away from the horror, the hamlet has also been seen in the Railway Children movie from 1970. The Hall also inspired Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.
