Welcome to Maikhana, to tipple with a Professor. But why Tipple with a Professor ? Because, travelling to different places provided an opportunity to taste alcohols from across the world -- well not quite, but the two extremes being more than 270 degrees separated in longitude -- from Mexico City to Wellington in New Zealand. And not just alcohol, the culture of drinking, preferred drinks in different places, and their history. There are no rules, but there are some practices. These vary across different cultures. It was fun to watch people drink at six in the morning, at their local time, albeit at the airport. In hindsight, I think I should have also done it. It would have been fun :-). Getting more and more informed about alcohol increased the interest further – to find more about the history of alcohol, and history of some popular drinks. So here I am --- sharing what I learnt, for what it is worth. And the pleasure of drinking increased much when I learnt the history of what I was drinking. It is a little like this -- if you know something, your appreciation increases. This is true even when you watch our favourite national sport -- cricket -- there are those who are excited and reach a state of euphoria as the crowd cheers, without necessarily knowing much about the game. And there are those who watch the cricket -- the field, the bowler, the strategy, the judgement, the bowler, the batsmen, the batting order and so on. Each person enjoys it as he or she likes it. The purpose of these videos is to provide an opportunity to some, who may want to know a little more than what they may already know. Once we start appreciating the flavours, the texture and how it came about, the pleasure of drinking increases. In the last few decades, alcohol drinking has evolved in our country, as has its availability and acceptance.
