Originally colonized by the French, it was once known as "Little Paris" due to the beautiful architecture that lined the once gorgeous streets, that existed prior to the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelee. A stratovolcano, that was located directly near the town, and that destroyed it, and 29,000 people in an instant, when the volcano had reached a climax, after more than 6 months of unrest, and intermittent eruptive active, it finally climaxed in a phreatomagmatic blast, created when ocean water finally penetrated the highly cracked and broken rocks, after many weeks of constant phreatic eruptions. This intermingling of cold ocean water, with boiling magma, created the most intense eruption seen during the 6 months of unrest. The pyroclastic flow, buried the town. But 3 days before this event occurred, something very strange happened... The volcanic unrest, created a panic in every animal living on the flanks of the volcano. Finally, as if all of them had decided to move at once, the chaotic stampete of animals and insects downhill began. And a sickening and horrific plague of snakes, poisonous centipedes, and insects that included red and yellow ants, swarmed the town of Saint-Pierre, right after a tsunami had hit the town, which itself was generated after Mount Pelee triggered a lahar flow, which, during it's descent towards the sea, buried a nearby sugar mill and inflicted the first casualties ever seen since this eruption began. These animals, which included deadly 2 meter or 6.5 foot long Bothrops lanceolatus, also known as fer-de-lance, Martinican pit viper, and the Martinique lancehead, are a venomous pit viper, and by the event of this event, 50 human casualties and 200 livestock and domestic animals were taken during this strange, unique and very dangerous event.
