This video describes my 10 month struggle, surgery, and 24 hour post-surgery status related to a herniated L5/S1 disc. I was a 24 year old and had excruciating pain down my right buttock and calf when I would sit down. Standing up or exercising brought me relief. Everyone I spoke with (even doctors) told me that some back surgeries don't have great statistics for success. I didn't want to risk a surgery-gone-wrong and be forced to live in pain the rest of my life and have to take tons of daily pain medications. Instead, I tried more conservative options to reduce the disc bulge. These included chiropractic adjustments, heating and massage therapy, ice packs, E-Stim, spinal decompression, the Egoscue method, and other exercises. Unfortunately, all of these provided only minutes of pain relief. I also received two epidural steroid injections, which helped for 1 to 2 weeks before the pain returned. In one particular chiropractic visit, I tried flexion distraction using the Cox Method. This worsened my condition greatly. After that experience, I was in constant/severe pain regardless of whether I was sitting, standing, or lying flat. I was bedridden for a month, on pain meds, and my condition was not improving. I began looking into surgery, and found the Utah Neurological Clinic and Dr. Gaufin who performed my microdiscectomy. These videos will track my recovery and I hope they will help someone in need.
