The marathon baton has passed to Edith May's granddaughter who ran in the 2026 Houston Marathon. Her family travelled from across the country to cheer her on near Mile 23, including her mother, Diana Kokernot Britton, who ran her first Houston Marathon at age seventeen and is a Houston Marathon legacy (+10) runner, and her aunt, Peggy Kokernot Kaplan, who was the women's champion in 1978. Cheering from the sidelines were Stephanie's husband, Brandon Schneider, her brother, Peter Kokernot, and wife, Sophie, and cousins Juliette Kokernot and Emma Hutcheson. Juliette paced Stephanie for the critical section of the Houston course from miles 20 to 23. Marathon running is in this family's DNA.! Her uncle, Walter Kokernot, ran the very first Houston Marathon in 1972. Walter's daughter, Juliette, and Emma ran their first marathon in New York City (2024). Stephanie also participated, and although her finishing time was just over four hours, she did set a PR (personal record). Stephanie's goal in Houston was to beat her grandmother's time of four hours. She finished the race in 3:49:06. Way to go, Stephanie!
