Dr. George John introduced Dr. Manchikatla Venkat Rajam, who presented on genetically modified (GM) crops, emphasizing that plant biotechnology, including genetic engineering, is crucial for sustainable agriculture and achieving the necessary increase in food production by 2050. Dr. Manchikatla Venkat Rajam detailed the advantages of genetic engineering over traditional plant breeding, outlined the stringent regulatory mechanisms for GM crops in India, and discussed successful examples like BT cotton and the controversial moratorium on BT Brinjal, while also addressing and refuting public and environmental concerns about GM food safety. Participants, including Prasanta Kumar Ghosh, Vanga Siva Reddy, Rakesh Jain, Krishan Kumar, and Dr. Amulya Panda, discussed the need for continued genetic engineering alongside newer genome-editing technologies, the decline of BT cotton production in India due to un-updated technology and legal issues, and confirmed that BT cotton does not affect the oil content in cottonseed.
