I've been getting a lot of trees in the dirt the past couple of days. On Tuesday night I was able to get some hybrid oaks and some chestnuts in the ground. Regarding the chestnuts, I'm likely too far north for them. The ones I bought are rated for growing zone 4, but I'm very close to growing zone 3, so true growing zone 4 plants don't tend to fare well up here. I've seen folks try them up here and 1 of 2 things tends to happen. They either winter kill or, if they do survive, I've never actually seen one produce a nut up here. But, I've never planted them myself. So I bought a few and we'll see what happens. I'm going into this one expecting failure. Feel free to share your experience with chestnuts in the far north if you've tried them. Regarding the hybrid oaks, I know of a lot of folks that have planted these and they've done well. I've been meaning to plant these for years and finally got around to it. I'll be sure to share the progress with these over the years. I'm always experimenting and am excited to see how these trees do!
