Today I drive the 00:00 Stepford Connect service from Stepford Victoria to Airport Terminal 2 (R046) in Class 717 set 717 061. The Class 717s were the third newest trains in the Stepford Connect fleet and were also the only six-car trains on Connect. As such, they were often utilised on services in the Stepford Airport area. R046 is one of the newest routes on the network, running in parallel with the more frequent R005 (Stepford Victoria - Airport Central) but with one extra stop at Terminal 2. As a result, this route provides a convenient and direct link to Terminal 2 without requiring to change for AirLink services. However, R046 services can get quite crowded, especially during peak hour, and passengers at Benton are better off getting the WaterLine route to Terminal 2 instead, which is quicker by two minutes. The Class 717s were introduced alongside the refurbished Class 707s to further increase capacity on the network, following increased patronage. While their top speed of 85 MPH is quite a bit slower than other trains in the fleet, it is still possible to remain on time when following the speed limits on the route.
