Angling in the Netherlands is subject to certain closed seasons, including closed seasons for specific types of bait and species of fish. This video explains all you need to know about the closed seasons in the Netherlands. First, let’s talk about the closed seasons for different types of bait. From 1 April until the last Saturday in May, anglers are prohibited from fishing with almost all types of artificial lures in the Dutch inland waters. The used dead bait, cut bait, and offal is also prohibited during this period. The only exception to this rule are artificial flies smaller than 2.5 cm. The Netherlands also has closed seasons for several species of fish. If you catch one of these fish during the closed season, you are required to treat it with the greatest possible care and to release it into the same water immediately. The main closed seasons for fish species are: Pike, from 1 March until the last Saturday in May Zander and perch, from 1 April until the last Saturday in May The month of March can be confusing to some anglers. Dutch law permits anglers to use artificial lures or dead bait during the month of March, but the month is also part of the closed season for pike. This doesn’t mean that anglers can’t fish for pike during March. This month is open for all predatory fish in the Netherlands, including pike. But if you catch a pike in March, you are required to release it immediately. In fact, the VISpas General Terms and Conditions require you to immediately release any pike you catch in the Netherlands almost all year long, which is why there are so many beautiful big pike swimming in the Dutch waters.
