Welcome to Hikeaholics. Chay, Nutty Nanny and Lee here ! Today, we are off to Halvergate for a 10 mile ‘Mills & Marshes’ circular walk around the marshes. We start and finish at St Andrew’s Church, Church Road, Wickhampton, Norwich. NR14 3PD. ( Unofficial Route ) There’s enough space at the church for around 6 cars. So if it’s full, you can park in the village of Halvergate and start the walk from there. We start in a SW direction away from the church along Church Road towards Halvergate. After a few hundred yards we take the first right, which is Wickhampton Road and follow this to Halvergate. As you enter the village the road name changes to Bakers Road. At the end of this road we turn right onto Marsh Road. This is where we pick up Weaver’s Way. We continue along Marsh Road until it joins up with Stone Road, which we follow onto the marshes. We continue along this track until it comes to a 3-way split, here we turn right. Following the Weaver’s Way signs we keep on this track until we reach Mutton’s Mill, which is recently renovated with 4 white sails. We leave Weaver’s Way here, to take the track on the left which passes in front of the Mill. We pass through the first gate and after passing through the second gate we immediately turn right. We follow this track and eventually come across High’s Drainage Mill closely followed by Howard’s Drainage Mill, both on the left hand side. We continue along passing Marsh Farm and Marsh Cottages and then follow the footpath signs to our right into a field. We stick to the right side here following the dyke. After leaving the field we take another right following the same dyke heading towards Breydon Water and the Railway Line. When crossing the Railway Line we look left and can see Lockgate Drainage Mill. We then take an immediate right following the Weaver’s Way and Wherryman’s Way signs. We continue along the waters edge (Breydon Water) which changes into the River Yare and along to Berney Arms Mill. Here, we can see Red Mill across the River Yare to the right. At Berney Arms Mill we leave Wherryman’s Way, but continue along Weaver’s Way with a right turn. We continue along passing Berney Arms Station and over the Railway Line. When we eventually leave the fields crossing a small dyke, we turn left and then left again onto Wickhampton Marshes and leaving Weaver’s Way. We continue along the track passing Stone’s Drainage Mill on the right hand side, which is not in the best state of repair. We carry on following the path back to Wickhampton Church and the car.
