Beuford Smith is a legendary photographer who has been taking pix since the 1960s. He's a long time member and current President Emeritus of the Kamoinge Workshop. Created in 1963 the Kamoinge Workshop is a group of Black photographers committed to authoring the stories of the African diaspora. Currently the group is enjoying a sort of renaissance and critical acclaim after years of being ignored by art galleries and mainstream media. I interviewed Smith at the Keith De Lellis Gallery in New York City about his life as a photographer and the impact of the Kamoinge workshop. Missing from the group photos in the video are Eli Reed and Gerald Cyrus who are two long time members of Kamoinge but were unable to attend the opening of the exhibit at the National Arts Club Gallery because they live to far away.
