Sweetwater Creek State Park Hike | Living in Cartersville

We drove about an hour and 15 minutes south of Cartersville to check out Sweetwater Creek State Park, and wow – this place is gorgeous! If you're new to the area and don't feel like driving all the way up to the mountains, this is a solid option. Real talk: we got a little lost on the trails (Chad was navigating and... well, I'm batting 100 on being right today 😂). We were supposed to do the red-white trail, but ended up on the white-blue-red combination. But honestly? The wrong turn led us to this massive tree I climbed into and some of the most beautiful views. So sometimes getting lost works out. The trail took us to the old Sweetwater Factory ruins – burned down by Sherman during the Civil War. Standing there looking at what used to be someone's entire livelihood and community really hit me. It made me think about something I hear all the time: people telling me they're waiting for home prices to drop 50-60% before they buy. And I always say – if that happens, it's because of some kind of devastation like this. Job losses, foreclosures, people loading up their stuff to find somewhere else to rent. We're not the billionaires who swoop in and buy during crashes – we're the people who lose our homes. I never want to see that happen. THE HIKE DETAILS: About 4-5 miles (though we definitely walked more with our detour) Moderate with some technical sections Lots of stairs and rocky terrain Beautiful creek views and historic factory ruins Filmed at The Hunger Games location! Pro tip: bring your hiking sticks even when you go south WHY WE'RE DOING THIS: Someone asked us why we started hiking. Honestly? We're in our 50s now, and everything just doesn't work the same anymore. I do a lot of walking on flats and a whole lot of sitting for work. Getting out on rougher terrain (but still safe, lots of people do these trails) helps strengthen our ankles and knees. Plus the smells in the woods – there's something called terpenes that you breathe in that actually makes you feel more relaxed. Your body can sense it even if you don't consciously smell it. And it's free! That was a big part of why we started. Just needed to be outdoors more and do something together. BEFORE YOU GO: Stop at BigUns for breakfast – it's right off Highway 61.
