Calling on heaven and earth as witnesses, the children of Israel are ordered to memorise this song to remind themselves of the mighty works of Yah and His covenant with them. It would also be a means to preserve, from one generation to the next, the story of the exodus from Egypt, the journey to the promised land and the ultimate redemption of the nation by the Hand of YHWH. The song warns against the risks of the comforts of the abundance and the disastrous results that would follow the people spurning the commandments of God, however God promises that He will be reconciled to the people and the land.
