Tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Rady JCC’s Berney Theatre, the Music & Mavens Concert and Lecture Series presents The French Connection, featuring father-and-son duo cellist Yuri Hooker and pianist/composer Ari Hooker. Pianist and composer Ari Hooker has quickly emerged as one of Canada’s most exciting young classical artists. In 2024, he made his solo debut with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, performing his own piano concerto — a bold and impressive milestone for any young composer-performer. Yuri Hooker is the recently retired principal cellist of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, whose decades of artistry have helped shape the sound of orchestral music in our city. Together, Ari and Yuri will explore the luminous colours of Debussy and Ravel, highlight the music of Winnipeg composer Sheva Schwartz, and present Ari’s own Cello Sonata, Op. 13..... a deeply personal collaboration between composer and performer, and between father and son.
