Inflammation of middle ear can lead to mastoiditis through the aditus to mastoid antrum. Patient has unbearable pain in the mastoid region and surgical procedures are resorted to when medication therapy is not amenable. Cholesteatoma is an important cause of mastoiditis. Mastoid bone is honey-comb like appearance and can get filled with infected material. Simple mastoidectomy involves the mastoidotomy. Complete mastoidectomy involves the entire removal of air cells. Modified radical type involves complete mastoidectomy and removal of the affected tissues like the bony ossicles. In the radical type, the entire mastoid and the middle ear contents are removed including the ear drum and these are converted into a single unit irrespective whether these tissues are affected or not. Revision and repair code sets of mastoidectomy are reported when there is a secondary encounter for addressing the complications of previous mastoidectomy. When the ear ossicles are affected, reconstruction is performed partially or completely. Prosthesis is placed in the chain called Partial Ossicular Reconstruction Prosthesis (PORP) and Total Ossicular Reconstruction Prosthesis (TORP).
