Ecology Day - Bottlenose dolphins in the Algarve: What shapes their abundance in a changing ocean?

This session was part of the Ecology Day 2025 programme. In this research session, MSc. Margarida Vizeu-Pinheiro talked about these findings and how they can be important for guiding conservation in a changing climate. Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are vital indicators of ocean health. Using nearly a decade of AIMM’s data from the Algarve, this study explores how sea temperature and food availability shape dolphin abundance across four age groups, highlighting the region’s potential role as a nursery area for young dolphins.
