He was a 1953-1964 leader of the Soviet Communist Party and from 1958 to 1964 also head of government. He began a period of "De-Stalinization", a period of freedom of expression marked by the return home of hundreds of thousands of political prisoners and a strong cultural boom. The highlight of Khrushchev's political life was his speech to the 20th Party Congress on 25 February 1956, in which he accused the Stalin regime and the cult of the figure of Stalin.
