February 20, 2025 - Adrisha Sarkar, University of California, Berkeley Abstract: A novel method integrating quantum sensing with droplet microfluidics is presented for high-precision chemical detection. Nanodiamonds with nitrogen-vacancy centers serve as quantum sensors to analyze rapidly flowing microdroplets containing analytes. This approach enables a noise-suppressed mode of optically detected magnetic resonance, allowing the detection of analyte-induced signals via nanodiamond fluorescence. The method demonstrates a low limit-of-detection for paramagnetic ions in droplets using small analyte volumes, with exceptional measurement stability. Additionally, droplets act as microconfinement chambers, enabling co-encapsulation of quantum sensors with various analytes, including single cells. This work paves the way for significant advancements, such as portable chemical testing devices, amplification-free chemical assays, and chemical imaging tools for probing reactions within microenvironments.
