When the 1973 Arab-Israeli War broke out, 16 Pakistani pilots volunteered to fight for Egypt and Syria. Eight of them were assigned by the Syrian Air Force to fly MiG-21 F-13. By April 1974, Israel and Syria still hadn't reached a ceasefire, but instead kept fighting a low-intensity conflict. On 26 April 1974, all eight Pakistani pilots scrambled to intercept Israeli aircraft approaching Syrian airspace. The last position was occupied by Flight Lieutenant Abdus Sattar Alvi. He spotted two Israeli Mirages approaching the formation but couldn't communicate this because their radios were jammed. The Pakistani pilot knew he had to engage the Israeli pair by himself.
