November 1967. Soundless footage of Brigadier Akwasi Afrifa, a member of Ghana's National Liberation Council (NLC) and national Commissioner for Finance, captured on a speaking tour of Western Ghana during which he was promoting the need for Ghanaian citizens to be aware of their civil rights. He stated that it was important, so that Ghana did not again experience again "the subjugation and humiliation" imposed by "one man". The man he was referring to was the the deposed Ghanaian president, Kwame Nkrumah. He told a Durbar of chiefs in Nzima that when the time came for parliamentary elections, only "men of wisdom, integrity, tolerance and God-fearing" qualities would be elected. In Half Assini, Afrifa called on the people to work hard so that the government could better meet their needs. He said that the needs of Ghana could no longer be met by "the machine gun" but by "hard work." He rounded off his tour at Jaway Wharf near Half-Assini, the main gateway between Ghana and Ivory Coast. Source of Footage: Reuters News Archive. Note: During the tour he was accompanied by Lt. Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, like Afrifa a future Head of State, when Acheampong was the Chairman for the Western Regional Committee of Administration. Both men would be executed along with Frederick Akuffo (who overthrew Acheampong) in June 1979, after an uprising of junior military personnel.
