Thailand's top court rules law criminalising abortion is unconstitutional

The criminalisation of abortions under certain circumstances in Thailand has been ruled unconstitutional. The constitutional court ruled in a split decision on Feb 19 that Article 301 of Thailand's criminal code contradicts with the constitutionally guaranteed right of non-discrimination and the right of liberty and life. Currently, Article 301 states any woman doing an abortion or has someone else carrying out one for her could be punished with up to three years in prison, a fine of roughly 6,000 baht (US$200), or both. The court has ordered a revision of the criminal code within a year.
