Every shot from my round at Tredegar & Rhymney Golf Club, Rhymney, Caerphilly, on 26th June 2024. 👉 Many more every shot golf vlogs here    • 18 Hole, Every Shot Golf Round Vlogs   A hot summers day and having already played 18 in the morning, I was planning to play another course before heading home. Tee times elsewhere looked busy so I decided to head to the Tredegar and Rhymney golf club to see if I could jump on the course. On arrival there were only a handful of cars present so I got my clubs out and headed to the first tee. Established back in 1921, this is a fabulous location for a golf course and certainly driving to the course, you appreciate the surrounding landscape and can understand the challenges of maintaining a course high up above the South Wales Valleys. This is not your typical manicured golf club and it's not in a standard location. What is is though, is a pure hilltop golfing experience. Overlooking some amazing views of the Rhymney valley on a wonderful course, it is maintained to the best of its available budget. The greens are deliberately kept longer to avoid them burning in the summer, there is little in the way of signage such as marker poles and the likes due to the sad fact of sporadic vandalism, and when I played two holes were out of action, but contingencies were in place to make it up to a full 18. Blind shots feature regularly here and after being shown round the first "three" holes (with the hole substitutions in play) by a lovely member, there were a few extra yards walked to work out where to hit off some of the tees. The course joined its regular layout from hole 4 onwards but even then, there are a few holes that required a quick reconnaissance beforehand! Once you understand what the course is about, it really grows on you and towards the end of the round and certainly now in hindsight, many months after playing it, I have become really fond of the course. It is raw, challenging, breath-taking, quirky but ultimately really enjoyable. I had the place more or less to myself, enjoying the sights and sounds on offer, all while experiencing a great test of golf. Several holes here made it into my short list for favourites of 2024 on what was the cheapest course I played. Green fees are a steal here and if there's no one about to take them, use the QR code on the clubhouse to pay that way. Some may look on this course as too unkempt for them, and yes the greens are not going to run high on a Stimpmeter but, so what. When you can enjoy a course for what it is, and where it is, take it all in and revel in the experience. This is a course and round that I look back on from 2024, and feel privileged to have experienced it. The golf, isolation, weather, views, value and friendliness I experienced here will live long in my memory and it is a course and location that deserves to be experienced by many others.
