In Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture, we spent an unforgettable day immersed in the powerful world of Taiko drumming with Wadaiko Masaya, a taiko drumming group and school founded in 2016 by Kenichi, a professional Japanese drummer dedicated to preserving and sharing this centuries-old art form. Our experience began with our guide Michiko, who introduced us to the history of taiko drums, how they’re traditionally made, and why some drums can cost thousands of dollars due to their craftsmanship and materials. Before stepping behind the drums, we created hachimaki—traditional Japanese headbands worn for focus and determination. Each one held personal meaning: • Michelle chose the symbol for happiness • Everly chose the symbol for dream • Kent chose the symbol for samurai Before learning our routine, we donned happi, traditional Japanese garments commonly worn during festivals—instantly grounding us in the spirit and energy of taiko culture. From there, our instructor Aoi led us through an entire taiko drumming routine, teaching rhythm, posture, breath, and movement. Wearing our hachimaki and happi — we experienced firsthand how taiko blends music, movement, discipline, and spirit. Taiko is more than drumming. It’s expression. It’s connection. It’s teamwork. And for our family, it became one of the most meaningful cultural experiences of our time in Japan—one we will never forget. 👉 Subscribe to the Frenchitivity YouTube Channel for more immersive cultural experiences from Japan and our travels around the world. A huge thank-you to Michiko for guiding us through this experience and sharing her deep knowledge of Japanese culture. We highly recommend her to lead you on a tour!
