(10 Jul 1998) English/Nat The leaders of the new Northern Ireland Assembly are desperately trying to win support for a compromise that could resolve the dispute over the Protestant marches. Northern Ireland First Minister David Trimble and Deputy First Minister Seamus Mallon met religious and business leaders in Stormont on Friday to discuss the Drumcree standoff. Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has accused Trimble of failing to get talks going between Protestant Orangemen and Catholics in Portadown, where the Orangemen want to march. Catholics in Portadown are stocking up on food and supplies in case the weekend brings more violence. Northern Ireland Assembly leaders David Trimble and Seamus Mallon met Catholic and Protestant church leaders on Friday to try to rally support for a peaceful solution to the Drumcree standoff. Trimble and Mallon are hoping to avert any further violence in the row over a ban on Protestant Orange Order marches in Northern Ireland. The Orangemen are angry about being denied permission to march through Portadown's largely Catholic area of Garvaghy Road. The church leaders issued a joint statement after spending more than an hour-and-a -half in discussions with Trimble and Mallon at Stormont. Trimble issued an appeal for calm after a six-day standoff between Orangemen and police forces, and thanked the religious leaders for their support. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We very much appreciate their (the churches') support, especially as it underlines the interests that everybody in society in Northern Ireland has in keeping the peace, keeping calm this weekend, and we very much welcome their presence." SUPER CAPTION: David Trimble, Ulster Unionist Party leader and Northern Ireland First Minister Mallon called on the people of Northern Ireland to heed the pacifist calls of church leaders against violence and destruction. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I also take this opportunity of asking every single person in the north of Ireland to weigh carefully the words of the church leaders and to measure those words against the potential for great danger in the north of Ireland, and if they do, I think we can all gain, communally, inspiration from their leadership and from their example." SUPER CAPTION: Seamus Mallon, Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Robin Eames, primate Archbishop of the Church of Ireland, called on both Protestants and Catholics to remember their faith. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We have come together again this morning to meet with the First and Deputy First Minister to support them in the search for a way forward in our present difficulties. We have done so in the belief that it is vital for people to raise their sights above the present fears and threats - to raise their sights to the Christian hope as it is expressed in Jesus Christ. We call on everyone to act responsibly and within the law for the sake of the present and on behalf of future generations." SUPER CAPTION: Robin Eames, primate Archbishop of the Church of Ireland Demonstrations have sporadically erupted into violence between the Orangemen holding their ground at Drumcree church and the riot police who there to contain them. The weekend could hold more trouble, when Protestants celebrate the victory of King William of Orange over Catholic King James the Second at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. Trimble is trying to win support for a compromise to avoid any further violence. But Gerry Adams, the President of Sinn Fein, is accusing Trimble of failing to calm fears across Northern Ireland in his new role as assembly leader.
