ICRU Report 38, Dose and Volume Specification for Reporting Intracavitary Therapy in Gynecology. The issue of dose and volume specification is addressed in this report, with a primary focus on its gynaecological applications. Nonetheless, the Report's concepts are made to be transferable to other intracavitary uses as well. Major topics covered in the paper include the current terminology and concepts of intracavitary therapy, suggestions for reporting absorbed doses and volumes, and the time-dose pattern associated with intracavitary therapy. Recommendations on (1) describing the methods employed, (2) specifying the total reference air kerma, (3) describing the reference volume, (4) specifying the absorbed dosage at reference sites, and (5) specifying the time-dose pattern are included in the Report. Radioactive source specifications for intracavitary therapy are addressed in the Report's appendix.
