Meghalaya: Shillong street vendors protest eviction drive, demand implementation of 2014 Act

A day after the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) carried out an eviction drive at the popular Police Bazar, hawkers and street vendors, under the banner of the Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers & Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA), staged a protest outside the Secretariat on July 1. The protestors demanded justice and full implementation of the Meghalaya Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014. Angela Rangad, a leader of Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) and the Meghalaya and Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA), told reporters at the protest site that there could be no dialogue with the government until it takes the concerns of hawkers seriously. She said these issues have been raised repeatedly since 2016. "Todays protest was spontaneous and they simply joined leaving their goods at Khyndailad unattended. We will all sit for a meeting and plan something more impactful, out protest will continue till our voices are heard. In the first list around 200 vendors got the certificate while most have been left out. Genuine vendors, who are supposed to get the certificate, did not. How did a lady selling kwai (betel nut) for 10 years not get the vending certificate?" Rangad questioned. The association submitted a letter to Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on June 30. They urged the government to recall the relevant file from the Provisional Town Vending Committee (PTVC), the SMB and the Urban Affairs Department.
