Why might narratives be important for economic decision-making? Kai Barron (WZB Social Science Center and Berlin School of Economics) is primarily concerned with questions about how we make sense of the world as a behavioral and experimental economist. His research focuses on belief formation, narratives, and mental models. In his INSIGHTS interview with WZB media officer Lena Gatscha, he discusses narrative persuasion and how one person may shape another’s interpretation of objective information. He also explains how behavioral economists can draw significantly from the common wisdom of everyday language and why economists should learn from other social sciences. Additionally, he highlights a financial advice experiment he conducted: It involves advisors and investors, where the advisors attempt to shape how the investors interpret objective information about a fictitious company. The results reveal that individuals are highly susceptible to narratives. Here you can find some of Kai Barron's research papers: https://sites.google.com/site/kaibarron/ The INSIGHTS project at the Berlin School of Economics aims to support and promote the communication of research and contribute to its transfer to the public. The WZB and DIW have received project funding from the Leibniz Association for this purpose. INSIGHTS includes all BSoE institutions and the DIW.
