KFDM exclusive: Colony Ridge developer addresses claims about illegal immigration and crime

An hour and a half away from Beaumont, you'll find a fast-growing development called Colony Ridge. Critics say it's become a metropolis of migrants and a symbol of the border crisis. Others even claim it's a haven for the Mexican drug cartels. It's a community in Liberty County mired in controversy, and it's now the epicenter of immigration politics. Colony Ridge is a name that's become synonymous with illegal immigration, and it's become a lightning rod for conservative criticism. Many of the roughly 50,000 who live here are skilled day laborers. "They could be working in Beaumont," said Liberty County Pct. 6 Constable Zack Harkness. Harkness acknowledges that are probably cartel-connected people who reside in Colony Ridge, but he tells KFDM that it's safe here, aside from a juvenile gang issue that's become on law enforcement's radar. Harkness always notes the visible presence of law enforcement at the development near Cleveland, Texas. Soon the criticism against Colony Ridge wasn't just from the right. In December, the Biden Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Colony Ridge. “Colony Ridge promised the American dream, but we allege that in reality, it has delivered a nightmare for thousands of hardworking Hispanic families who hoped to build their homes in the Terrenos Houston community,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
