Originally streamed Jan 31, 2023. The Genesis has a lot of cool action games, and I need to check some of them out! Chakan is developed a 1992 action game developed by Extended Play. Based upon a comic book character, this action game has a lot of dark and edgy atmosphere to it. The music has so much dark "evil" edge to it, sometimes I feel I'm being cut; that's the kind of atmosphere Chakan has. I kinda like it, though. Chakan is known by some as a bad game, and it is indeed quite awkward to play and a bit hard to understand, although if you can get into it there are some really cool things about it. The controls and level design are definitely awkward. This game has a double jump, and it's one of those where you need to hit the button right at the top height of your jump, so it's easy to fail. This is a bit of a problem when the levels are often designed to make you need to execute this double jump constantly. You also move quite slowly in this game, and although you can jump very high, the slow horizontal movement of your jump gives it a short horizontal reach that makes it feel frustrating at times. Enemy design can be frustrating as well, with some enemies seemingly designed to be out of reach of Chakan's attacks, and bosses that just run around and spam attacks, seemingly requiring your invincibility spell. Still, I quite like this game's potion system. A bit similar to how Jewel Master let you mix different elemental rings for different effects, this game has potions of four colors and every combination of two potions does something unique, including a potion with itself; this means 16 different combinations with 16 different abilities. Some of these are basically duplicates, and it's funny how there is both an invincibility spell and an invisibility spell that both do the same thing! This is a good thing because invincibility often feels necessary in this game. Something even more amazing buried within this potion system: the ability to create checkpoints anywhere in a stage! This extremely powerful ability is game changing, and really helps to alleviate certain frustrating level spots. There's a catch to this potion system which is actually quite interesting. This game works on a hub system, and you can choose the order to do stages. Certain stages are really great for farming certain potions, but if you complete those stages you will no longer have access to that farming spot. This means that an important part of playing through the game will be awareness of good farming spots, and managing them. You'll want to make sure you at least maintain a way to farm invincibility and time resetting potions until you are almost finished with the stages. This game is said to be very hard, but I think it's really more obtuseness that makes it seem that way. The only punishment for dying, besides losing your stage progress, is losing time; if your time runs out it resets your progress on a series of stages and forces you to start over. That's not such a big punishment, and can even be abused to the player's advantage if you decide you want to go back to an earlier part of a stage to farm potions. It's also easily managed by using a certain potion combination to reset the timer. And if you know about the checkpoint potion, you can easily brute force your way through even the most difficult stage. The game may seem hard at first, but it's really just a matter of understanding it's arcane systems. Because of this game's kind of charmingly over edged atmosphere and it's unique style of resource management, for me I find it to be pretty interesting. It makes up for it's shortcomings and makes it well worth checking out. Just know what you're getting into with this game!
