In the year 1000, Poland stretched from the Oder River in the west to the Bug River in the east and from the Baltic Sea down to the Carpathian Mountains. By 1569, Poland united with Lithuania to form the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth — one of the largest states in Europe. It stretched from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, covering parts of today's Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. But by the late 1700s, After three brutal partitions by Russia, Prussia, and Austria, the country ceased to exist for 123 years. In 1918, after World War I, Poland regained its independence, but In 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union divided and occupied Poland. After World War II, the Allies redrew Poland's borders.
