TruMakers smoker controller competition: Bringing makers and Industry together. This competition is designed to facilitate accessibility and engagement with Industry 4.0, AI&ML, automation and science at the place makers are at today. The next generation of industrial automation technicians and engineers in waiting are makers tinkering in their garages that don't necessarily have access to high end software tools. Creating a competition where the cost barrier to entry is low enables accessibility for everyone while showcasing what is possible with the latest industrial software tools available. What does the competition entail? Contestants will be competing to create the most innovative meat smoking controller possible either using the TruMakers innovate board (Python based), the Siemens S7-1200 or the controller of their choice. Meat smokers are analogous to industrial furnaces and have many similarities to industrial controllers that are used widely today. During the competition we actively encourage participants to innovate around temperature control, cloud connectivity and AI powered data analytics to develop better meat smoking algorithms. Contestants are welcome to use any type of smoker such as pellet or wood depending upon their personal choice. Both systems have chambers that can be controlled to improve the overall smoking process, like many industrial processes. Entrants will be scored on their creativity of execution, impact of the features displayed, use of technology such as IoT, AI or ML and how their solution makes smoking meat better. The contest will be held virtually so everyone can compete remotely and submit their application by video for scoring by our panel of judges. Winners of the competition will receive prizes from our industry sponsors. What inspired the competition? Creating a bridge for makers to enter industry as baby boomers retire creating a new pipeline of talent that the industry is desperate for. Many industrial professionals today lack content that is accessible, accurate and easy to understand quickly and efficiently. We hope the competition inspires learning and innovation around a system that is the equivalent of an industrial boiler. Are there sponsored kits available or do I need to purchase the controller? Siemens have kindly donated a number of 1200 kits that contestants could make a written application to receive at no cost. Kit numbers are limited so make sure your application is compelling.
