“All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither…” Bilbo Baggins Winter adventure camping and exploring Death Valley and Eastern Sierra. I took the remote Harry Wade Escape route from Baker, Calif off I-15. The route took me up the eastern side of Bad Water. I spent the night cowboying on the open desert of the Owlshead Mountains. It gave me that deep sense of place - until a sudden rain squall drove me into the car. The desert has such a deep silence that you can actually listen to. Next morning, I was rewarded with a fabulous wildflower superbloom at Jubilee Pass. Highlights were a strenuous hike up Golden Canyon to Zabriski Point. Deep yellow and gold strata highlighted by the Red Cathedral wall. I returned by the Badlands Loop. I camped at Texas Springs and the next day explored Titus Canyon. I tried to get other hikers in the photos to appreciate the vast depth and height of these magnificent canyons: “Majestical”… as the Wilder people say. Next, I traveled over Town Pass on ca190. I stopped for lunch at Rainbow Canyon, continued to Lone Pine, and camped in the ever-wondrous Alabama Hills rocks. I hiked some miles exploring trails and enjoyed a warm campfire for the cold nights. Night temps were in the low 30s. I drove up to Bishop for a Hot Springs soak, camped at the BLM Pleasant Valley Pit, and hung out in town most of the day. The next night, I camped at Tinimaha Creek on the way back to the Alabamas for some more hiking. Next, I drove south to hang out in Randsburg ghost town with the Mad Maxxes and the OHV nomads and weekenders. I had to drive north to Ridgecrest to get around to Jawbone Station and Red Rocks Camp. All paved roads were wiped out by recent storms, okay for the OHV warriors but not the Subie. — Click on image for movie —
