Nigeria, the most populous black nation on earth, is the nucleus of African linguistic diversity with over 520 ethnic groups and speakers of Afro-Asiatic, Niger-Congo, and Nilo-Saharan languages spread across its 36 states. Plateau State, situated in North Central Nigeria, houses about 56 ethnic groups spread across 17 local government areas of the state. In this documentary, we will take you on a journey through the fascinating world of the Berom people, an ethnic group residing mainly in Jos North, Jos South, Barkin Ladi, and #Riyom Local Government Areas, with smaller populations in other areas in #Plateau State and Southern Kaduna State. The Berom people have a rich culture and history that spans back hundreds of years. They primarily speak Berom (Birom), a language classified as a Niger-Congo, Atlantic–Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue–Congo, Plateau, Beromic language. The #Berom people have a few different theories on their origins and migration patterns. Some believe that the Berom are indigenous to the Plateau region and have always been there. In contrast, others believe that the Berom originated in Central #Africa and are related to the Bantu civilization. Historical studies suggest that the Berom could have arrived in Nigeria around 1,700 B.C. The Berom have several festivals that have existed since pre-colonial times. The Madyeng Festival celebrates the arrival of the rainy season, ensuring a successful farming season. The Nshok #Festival is a hunting celebration, characterized by much drinking and dancing. The Nzem Berom Festival, founded in 1981, showcases cultural displays from various parts of Berom land. The Berom people are primarily agrarian, growing crops such as Fonio (Acha), Maize, Millet, among others, for food. They also grow a range of vegetables in commercial quantities. The colours Green and Red are associated with the Berom people, representing life, nature, renewal, energy, fire, blood, danger, strength, power, and passion. The Berom people were ruled in their villages by a council of elders led by a Chief Priest known as 'Gwom Kwit.' However, in 1916, colonial officials established the stool of Gbong Gwom Jos to monitor and control the activities of the indigenous people. The Berom people have a fascinating history and culture that continues to thrive and evolve today. Their language, festivals, and traditions are essential components of their identity, and they remain proud of their heritage.
