This is a ramble from one of my earlier Elden Ring streams, somewhat hastily edited together. Most of my streams have a few random discussions like this here and there, so don't forget to follow my Twitch if you want to participate. Here I'm reflecting on the state of games nowadays relative to how games were developed and sold back in the day (in my case, 20+ years ago). As the average consumer is less able to purchase heaps of $60-70 games and expansion packs (or $120+ as they would cost relative to a $70 game like Mario 64 in 1996) there's been a shift to free to play games where a few big spenders support the game and most players spend little to nothing. There's also games operated as an ongoing service with a smaller monthly fee. Both cases support continued development for content, balance, and bugfixing. Personally, I'd like to make a single reasonable purchase once and enjoy a "full" base game as much as I want, while having the occasional big expansion pack with a heap of new content as a smaller but still sizeable purchase (think Red Alert 2 vs Yuri's Revenge). However, I can understand how the model has changed to support the current climate where you can't ask the average consumer to spend the equivalent (in today's dollars) of $120-150 per game - especially for big multiplayer games that are effectively unplayable if you can't get enough people to play with, and thus can't require every single player to spend that much money up front.
