This is the First of the Two films on Noah Harari’s compelling and comprehensive primer for the age of AI & the multiple existential threats it poses. in this this first film ‘Information as power: From Stories to AI’ I’ve sought to locate his thinking on AI in his larger framing of what he calls Information Networks, summarising his ideas and arguments in 3 parts. The first ‘Locating Harari’ locates his arguments within his wider body of work, his position as a public intellectual and as an expression of his liberalism. The 2nd part, ‘Information as power- from Stories to AI’ setts out his conception of history as driven by successive revolutions in information technology. In particular, it seeks to highlight what we might learn from earlier information networks and technologies so that we can better understand the nature of what we face. Finally, the 3rd and most important part ‘AI the threat multiplier’ considers the many threats we face and is organised under two headings. The power of AI as a function of its capabilities and its capacity to act independently and the Nature of AI as fundamentally alien and which points to the possibility of a post-human civilisation.
