Haripad Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple :- One of the oldest temple of Kerala ( Haripad Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple at Haripad , Alleppey, Kerala , India ) has gained its popularity not only within the state but beyond its geographical boundary. History says that this temple is above 3500 years old and was established by Lord Parashurama. Popularly known as Dakshina Palani (Palani of south), as mentioned this temple is devoted to Lord Subrahmanya. As you wander around the temple premise, you will come across many Tamil inscription engraved on the temple’s walls. Another unique fact of this temple is its idol. The idol of Lord Subrahmanya was said to be built in a sculptural style that was followed in Buddhist era. So, the idol is very large in size with four arms. Till date, many unique rituals and ceremonies are celebrated in this temple. So, visit the temple during one such celebration to watch the rituals. The Avani Utsavam in Chingom, Markazhi Utsavam in Dhanu, Chitra Utsavam in Medom form the Utsava Trayam.Trikkarthika in Vrischikam, Prathishta day in Idavam, Skanda Ashthami in Thulam, Navarathri in Kanni and Thaipooyam in Makaram are some of the other important festivals of the Haripad Temple. The presiding deity of the temple is Murugan in four armed form with Vel in one hand, Vajrayudha in another hand one hand bestowing blessing and the other toughing its thighs. The idol is about eight feet in height. The idol is believed to have presence of Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma. The idol faces east. Beside the main deity there are many other deities which include Dakshina Moorthy, Lord Ganesh, Thiruvambadi Kannan, Naga, Shasta, Keezhtyar Kovil Subrahmanyan. Haripad is close to the Arabian Sea and connects Mavelikkara and Thrikkunnappuzha. It is the land of 'Mayura Sandesa', the land of snake boats and the land of music, dance and drama. A main feature of Haripad which attracts even the foreigners is the 'Payippad Jalolsavam'. It is believed the idol of Lord Subrahmanya was brought from Kandalloor with escort of snake boats. Payippad Jalolsavam is conducted to renew this memory even now…. The unique feature of this temple is that having 3 kodiyettu (hoisting dhvaja on dhvaja stambha) utsavas in a calendar year. Another specialty is that these festivals are observed on the basis of Tamil calendar. The Avani Utsavam in Chingom, Markazhi Utsavam in Dhanu, Chithira Utsavam in Medom form the Utsava Trayam. In these three utsavas, three bhavas are attributed to the deity such as Lord Vishnu in Avani, as Lord Shiva in Markazhi, as Lord Subrahmanya himself in Chithira. Therefore, Chithira Thiruvulsavam, the annual festival, is the most important here. Thrikkarthika in Vrischikam, Prathishta day in Idavam, Skanda Ashthami in Thulam, Navarathri in Kanni and Thaipooyam in Makaram are some of the other important festivals of the Haripad Temple.
