The tug LOIS M is seen upbound, entering the Welland Canal from Lake Ontario, Nov 8 2025. LOIS M has an empty barge, MM142, lashed to her port side. LOIS M lands at Wharf 1, Port Weller (on the east side of the canal) and waits. In the meantime, the downbound tug VIGILANT 1 is departing Lock 1, pushing the loaded barge MM141. VIGILANT I also lands at Wharf 1, beside LOIS M. Not sure whether the tugs swapped barges and returned, or whether both tow teams continued on as they were. (If LOIS M was to continue upbound with her barge, I wonder if she'd first have to disengage from her barge? Seeing as the barge is lashed to LOIS M's port side, maybe LOIS M was planning to stop at Wharf 1 in order to re-position herself behind her barge, so as to be able to enter the locks with LOIS M propelling the barge from the rear? Or, could LOIS M and her barge go through the locks while lashed?) - Also, the removal of a MAJOR amount of trees and shrubs has recently begun on Seaway lands, including this large familiar tree which had stood across the street from the entrance gate to Wharf 2 for decades. The tree removal activity seems to stretch along the canal road all the way up the Glendale bridge. This is not a 'selective-type' of removal, such as the clearing out of deadwood; they are basically clear-cutting everything along the way. Very jarring to see this.
