So we finally got around to reviewing MVMT watches. And today we not only have 1 but 2 - 2 reviews of MVMT watches. We’ll be taking a look at the white tan Classic watch and the Silver Arctic Leather Women’s watch. I’ll be talking over this unboxing of these two watches from MVMT. And the more detailed reviews or links to these reviews are in the description below. As minimalist watch experts at Great Watches (our link and website in the description below) - the MVMT brand has really taken off since their Indiegogo campaign in 2013. A little about the company - it was a concept that was born from college dropouts and aspiring entrepreneurs Jake Kassan and Kramer LaPlante. And I’m gonna read from the website a bit here: Tired of big grand markups and outdated retail model, we set out to create an online-first brand. One original watch design and a successful crowdfunding campaign got us off the ground. And if you google MVMT indiegogo, you will indeed see their original crowdfunding campaign. They originally priced the watches as $59 with six different models. The crowdfunding campaign was indeed a success and they raised $219,898 with 2887 backers. Their success not only spawned MVMT as a brand but they have proven the concept -- which is to launch a primarily online brand for fashion watches. Now if you look across the Internet there are dozens and dozens of reviews and videos about them. It’s literally love or hate and almost nothing in between. On one hand, you have the old school watch collectors and enthusiasts who absolutely hate on these quote unquote fashion watches made from China. Then on the other you’ve got other watch consumers who actually love how this company is disrupting the watch industry which has been dominated by retail distribution and more well known brands from Switzerland, Japan and what not. For me, I get what they’re trying to do. In fact, I love the fact they have the boldness on the formidable task of disrupting an ancient retail model - which is you got these old school brands like Tag Heuer and the Seiko watches and the retail only distribution model… and replacing it with a online direct-to-consumer model. The innovated approach is great and their success have paved the way for others to try to emulate them such as the Vincero watches, the Original Grain, the Mileneal watches, the Daniel Wellingtons… You see all these companies using crowdfunding and the power of social media to drive up the sales. If I could compare MVMT to another brand, it’s probably similar to how Apple markets their products. You can easily build better computers if you learned Linux and/or built an amazing machine with a PC. I mean you don’t see any of these pro gamers bringing an Apple in their esport competitions - it’s all PC. But people continue to buy Apple and will continue to do so because Apple knows how to market their stuff. They know what makes people tick when it comes to buying something. They market themselves as hip and cool… so if you wanna be hip and cool like Apple. Buy Apple. MVMT approaches their sales in the same way. They understand a TON of people can be reached via Facebook and Instagram, And indeed they are all over these 2 platforms. Now compare that with the Seikos and other watches who uses the retail distribution model… Watches like MVMT will have more reach and more eyes on their ads simply because they understand how to use technology to generate sales. I’ve never been to a watch store in probably a decade, but like most people I do spend at least half an hour per day on Facebook and probably another half an hour on Instagram and Youtube. So there’s a higher chance I’ll see MVMT ad and any new products they have versus what new Seiko watches come out. If the older brands ever learn to be market like the Daniel Wellingtons and MVMT and all these other minimalist brands, then they can probably kill off those brands. Maybe. But when it coms to fashion, it’s about marketing and having a good enough product that is aesthetically pleasing. MVMT ticks off on those two counts. Final verdict? I think they are aesthetically pleasing. Again, I offered my camera man a choice of 3 different brands and he chose the MVMT that I reviewed today. Are they built like the classic Swiss watches? Probably not. They aren’t as heavy or robust as the Gucci watch. But with MVMT, it’s all about style and whether you like it or not.
