He is the author of about 900 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals (more than 28.000 citations, google scholar 10.11.2017). He has been President of the European Society of Hypertension (2015-2017). He has been President of the Italian Society of Hypertension and Chairman of Working Group Hypertension and the Heart of the European Society of Cardiology. He was also a member of the Science Council of the European Society of Cardiology and of the Executive Committee of the European Council for Cardiovascular Research. He has received the Peter Sleight Award of the ESH in 2011. He was a member of the Steering Committee of several randomized multicentre clinical trials in cardiovascular care and received grants for research from public and private institutions. He is responsible for the ongoing large population study Vobarno in East Lombardia (since 1993)
