Buxton is a historic spa town nestled on the edge of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire, renowned for its elegant Georgian and Victorian architecture and its natural thermal springs. As one of England's highest market towns, its unique location offers visitors an excellent base for exploring the surrounding stunning landscapes, including hills, dales, and caverns. The town's fame dates back to Roman times, who established a settlement here, known as 'Aquae Arnemetiae', to take advantage of the naturally warm mineral water that rises at a constant 28°C. This spa heritage was revived and dramatically expanded in the 18th century by the 5th Duke of Devonshire, shaping the sophisticated townscape seen today. The town's grand architectural jewels are a main attraction, led by the magnificent Buxton Crescent, a Grade I listed Georgian masterpiece modelled after the Royal Crescent in Bath. Recently restored, it now houses a luxury hotel, spa, and the Buxton Crescent Experience, which details the town’s long history of curative waters and society. Opposite the Crescent is St Ann's Well, where visitors can still sample the famous Buxton spring water for free. Other notable landmarks include the stunning Buxton Opera House, a Frank Matcham-designed Edwardian theatre, and the striking Devonshire Dome, originally built as stables for the Crescent and later becoming a hospital, now part of the University of Derby's campus.
