Workers' Party MP Jamus Lim spoke in Parliament on 6 March 2025, making the case for reinstating Thaipusam as a public holiday in Singapore. He traced the historical decisions that led to its removal in 1968, highlighting how the Indian community had fewer holidays to begin with compared to other groups. Lim argued that if public holidays are allocated based on religious significance, the current distribution is imbalanced. While Vesak Day is observed, it is primarily celebrated by Buddhists rather than the local Indian community, whereas Thaipusam remains an important and vibrant religious occasion for Hindus. Citing a statement made in 1968 that holidays could be reconsidered if Singapore prospered, Lim pointed out that the country’s GDP has grown nearly sixty-fold since then. He called on the government to fulfill that promise and reinstate Thaipusam as a national holiday. #Singapore #JamusLim #Thaipusam #Parliament #PublicHoliday
