SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Fernando Henrique Cardoso, President of Brazil: Q-How did Brazil see the Uruguayan position during the financial crisis not advancing to a corralito? "I think that the position taken was very good. I spoke with president Batlle about it, I think that he had a historic view of it, he said it was impossible to take that road as it was taken somewhere else, saying that the Uruguayan situation did not require a 'corralito'. Much less Brazil having a very solid financial system." 5. Medium shot of Brazilian flag 6. Two shots of presidential motorcade 7. Wide shot of presidential building 8. President Cardoso and ministerial delegates arrived at Carrasco airport for an intense 27 hour visit with his Uruguayan counterpart president Jorge Batlle. Both presidents will analyze the difficulties in the region that have virtually paralyzed commerce activities through Mercosur, the trade block which includes Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. Chile and Bolivia hold partial membership. Brazil holds the presidency of Mercosur until the end of 2002. Both Brazil and Uruguay have received substantial credits from international monetary sources to face the crisis. Uruguay recently received credits from the International Monetary Fund, IMF, and from the Inter-American Development Bank, IADB, totalling over 3 (b) billion US Dollars. Brazil got an injection of 34 (b) billion US Dollars from the two same sources.
