I just attended a model casting for Charlotte Tilbury, and it got me thinking. A day in the life of a model honestly, has its ups and downs. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. Or failing to recognize incredible opportunities. Being a Model gives you the amazing opportunity to travel, meet new people, gain new experiences, and earn an amazing income to live off. Personally, I’ve met amazing people, being models, creatives and people genuine in love with their craft. I wouldn’t call it a negative, but a few of the problems I hold have stopped me from committing into this profession as I feel it may lack a crucial factor to success. As a model, you work for yourself, and are represented by an agency who promotes you and your look, and in return gets a cut. This model of management for models as we move deeper into the technological age is becoming outdated and is slowly fleeting. Just as the rise of independent Musicians and artist are rising and are staying confidently independent, this is becoming more and more common in the modelling industry with the creation of social media, allowing us to create and curate our own brands, and deal with companies directly. Modelling agencies today will tell you that through them is the only way to succeed in the industry and you should sign because this is the case. This, however, is just not true. People are now able to take their opportunities into their own hands in the fashion industry and craft their own carers. This in itself is an amazing opportunity because it removes the barriers from those that were denied entry in the industry and puts perspective in their own hands. Honestly, I’m indifferent for now. I do see the amazing opportunities being a signed model and I also see just how incredible the introduction of the new internet has among so many new people, and slightly feel the old way is not needed anymore.
