Lammy tells UN Balfour Declaration’s promise for Palestinian rights was ‘not upheld’

“It is a historical injustice that continues to unfold.” On Tuesday, British foreign secretary David Lammy announced to the UN that the UK will recognise a State of Palestine. In the speech he highlighted that the Balfour Declaration, which announced the British Government’s support for the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine in 1917, also promised “that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights” of the Palestinians and that this promise “has not been upheld”. Lammy added that “the Netanyahu government’s rejection of a two-state solution is morally wrong” and it “harms the interests of the Israeli people, closing off the only path to a just and lasting peace”. It comes after Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Tuesday that the UK will act by September to recognise a Palestinian state if no Gaza ceasefire is reached.
